Cargill Recalls 185,000 Pounds of Turkey

Meat giant Cargill has issued a new recall that affects 185,000 pounds of ground turkey. Sunday's announcement said that the recall included "85-percent-lean fresh ground turkey products produced at the company's Springdale, Ark., facility on Aug. 23, 24, 30 and 31, 2011, due to possible contamination from Salmonella Heidelberg." The firm posted a list of the problem products on its website.

The new recall follows another issued in early August, affecting 26 million pounds of ground turkey that made dozens sick and may have killed one person. The new recall may be smaller, but it is a sign that the huge agribusiness firm is still struggling with quality control.

Recalls have become a significant problem between the federal government and food companies recently. Del Monte sued the FDA on August 22, saying that it would "seek an injunction that would lift an FDA rule restricting the importation of wholesome fresh cantaloupes into the United States." The case was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.

There have been concerns that the FDA cannot afford do its job as it tries to police the food supply. The Senate recently approved a bill to add $50 million to the agency's budget. But, the House has pressed for legislation that would cut some food safety funds. House Republicans said that the "U.S. food supply is 99 percent safe," according toThe Washington Post. Part of the 1% that is left must include huge recalls from Cargill.
