Sitter Charged With Putting Baby In Bed Of A Pickup Truck

Talk about adventures in babysitting.

A central Florida woman was arrested over the weekend for child neglect in an incident that happened while she was working as a babysitter. But 23-year-old Keyona Davis did not partake in your ordinary dash-over-to-the-boyfriend's-house kind of negligence. Rather, if the charges are proven true, Davis committed an infraction of an entirely different order.

Headed out for a spin around the block with the 8-month-old whom she was babysitting, Davis allegedly decided that the best option was to put the baby boy in a stroller in the back of a pickup truck, and then ride around Daytona Beach's two busiest streets, according to a report from the AP.

Eyewitnesses grew alarmed, and contacted police.

The arrest affidavit obtained by the website Smoking Gun said that Davis "should have reasonably concluded that a 8-month-old child in a stroller in the bed of a pickup truck is a highly dangerous situation and incredibly unsafe."

The child was not injured in the joy ride.

Once brought before judge, Davis was mystified at the charge that she had even crossed the line of impropriety.

"It's not like they give you a handbook or anything on ... what's neglect and what's not neglect," she told the presiding Florida judge, according to a report in The Daily News.

While the subject of bad babysitters is often fodder for movies, Davis, should the charges be proved true, would be poised to join a list of neglectful, real-life babysitters.

Many of the worst have gone to jail, but few have been quite as negligent as Kristal Khan. A day-care operator working without a proper license, Khan fell asleep on the job in 2009 after taking a cold remedy. As she dozed, an 11-month-old boy in her care fell into a bucket she had left out for mopping and drowned, according to The New York Daily News. Two years later, she was found guilty for reckless assault and was sentenced to four years in jail.
