Best Deals on Back-to-School Clothes: A Cheapism.com Cheat Sheet

Updated

Still looking for last-minute back-to-school clothing deals? Cheapism.com perused hundreds of items at the nation's biggest retail chains to find the best made -- and priced -- kids' clothing.

The review website highlights those products and services it deems to offer the highest quality at the lowest price -- from clothing and accessories to hotels and restaurants.

It should come as no surprise that Walmart (WMT) took the ribbon for low-price leader for back-to-school clothes, according to Cheapism's findings.

But the site also called out a range of stores that make both the quality and price/value cut on a variety of kids' apparel and accessories, as well as which retailers scored high for things like coupon offers.

Here are Cheapism.com's picks:

Shoes: Target (TGT), the nation's cheap-chic discounter, scored for its affordable and expansive footwear assortment.

While many stores "fall short on price or selection, Target delivers both," Max Levitte, co-founder and CEO of Cheapism.com, tells DailyFinance.

"We found inexpensive shoes for all occasions, including girls dress flats and low heels for $10," adds Kara Reinhardt, an editor at Cheapism.

Tops: While the store can't claim the lowest prices per se, Old Navy (GPS) offers "the best value for the money with plenty of stylish, high-quality options," Levitte says.

T-shirts and polo shirts start at under $10, Reinhardt says.

Jeans: Walmart "takes the cake for durable jeans at the lowest prices," Reinhardt says.

Dress Clothes: When it comes to pants, skirts and dresses, "your best best is Kohl's

(KSS), where a sizable selection and high quality make up for slightly higher prices," such as $32 for boys dress pants and $26 for the retailer's Sonoma store brand skirts, Reinhardt says.

Outerwear: Cheapism.com cites Old Navy as the best place to find stylish, light children's outerwear, such as jean jackets and windbreakers, at bargain prices.

School Uniforms: Although "all the stores we visited carry affordable items, at least online, J.C. Penney (JCP) dedicates an entire section to school uniforms, offering an unbeatable selection," Levitte says. For example, Izod (PVH) shirts and pants there cost $20 to $25.

Sales: Kohl's outpaced other retailers for its host of promotions, from store-wide sales to coupon offers for its charge card holders.
