House of the Day: A Portland Home Actually 'On the Water'

Updated

Liberal use of "on the water" has eroded the phrase's descriptive integrity over the years. But in the case of this floating home in Portland, Ore., which sits on a concrete slab over the Columbia River, "on the water" reclaims its semantic virtue.

The usual criticism of 'floating' homes is that they're too small, but at 4,200 square feet, this river house offers ample room -- five bedrooms and 4½ bathrooms. And with a 17-foot spa on its waterside deck, residents can soak just above the river while absorbing panoramic views of nearby mountains.
