House of the Day: Live Like a Sultan in a Moorish Palace
Calling all wannabe-sultans: Massage your mammoth-size ego by settling down in this palace, located in the only state with a secession clause.
A Moroccan architectural firm designed this 19,668-square-foot, bed-of-roses residence in Houston, which assures us that its chiseled stone and stucco exterior abide by the architectural standards of a royal residence. Among its other rooms, the $8.9 million estate boasts eight bedrooms, three kitchens, an enormous pool, a giant courtyard (replete with fountain) and, er, a petting zoo.
You'll need to buy exotic animals to show off to your friends at the petting zoo, however -- animals aren't part of the package.
But it does have the digs to put up visitors who are jazzed about stroking, say, fennec foxes: The palace has a pair of two-story guesthouses with three bedrooms and 2½ baths. So buy the place, purchase some gazelles and short-tailed gerbils, take on some fern-fanning hired help and nurture your delusions of grandeur!
