Luxury Camping, New York Style

Updated

A level spot of ground and a soft pad under your sleeping bag is what most people think of as luxury camping. Well, the bar has been raised -- big time -- by one New York establishment. AKA Central Park recently introduced five-star camping on a terrace in the heart of Manhattan.

AKA specializes in "extended-stay housing" -- those units that you move into when you transfer to a new city or are based in a place for just a month or so. But instead of offering just a temporary apartment to hang your hat, they're offering a penthouse with a 900-square-foot wraparound terrace that can be turned into a "campsite" -- albeit one with a plush bed, a wood-burning fireplace, and midnight snacks of gourmet s'mores from La Maison du Chocolat, washed down with cocktails or champagne. Flashlights, mood music and an e-reader loaded with fireside stories available upon request.

Not for the faint of wallet, a single night for the penthouse unit and its outdoor bedroom will set you back $3,000, so maybe you want to write this one into your relocation package first.

And they probably had you at health benefits.

[Clarification: An earlier version of this post had an incorrect description of the wraparound deck and daily rate.)
