Man Tries to Steal Deputy's Gun at Airport

A man was arrested at a California airport Friday for attempting to take a deputy's gun.

The incident occurred at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, where Leonardo Alvarez, 31, was arrested and sent to the Orange County Jail.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, the man approached the deputy from behind while in the airport's departures gate. He grabbed the gun, but the deputy and another Sheriff's Department employee were able to overpower him, reports the Associated Press.

Authorities also reported the man admitted to consuming narcotics.

No shots were fired and the gun was recovered, though the Sheriff's Department employee did sustain an injury to his hand.

Alvarez could face several felonies, including assault and battery on a peace officer, reports CBS Los Angeles.
