Dole, Kroger Recall Italian Salad Blends Over Listeria Concerns

Dole recallDole Fresh Vegetables recalled 2,880 cases of Dole Italian Blend salad and another 442 cases of Kroger Fresh Selections Italian Style Blend salad from 15 states and Canada after a sample tested positive for listeria monocytogenes contamination, the company said.

So far no one has reported getting sick from eating the salad, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported. Listeria can cause a potentially serious infection that may include fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea. Those most at risk for developing an infection include pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.

Dole said it issued the recall as a precaution after one package of its Italian Blend salad tested positive for listeria during testing by the Ohio Department of Agriculture. The salads were distributed in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin as well as in the New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec provinces of Canada.Kroger said its stores in eastern Missouri; Nashville, Tenn.; and northern parts of West Virginia also got the salads mixes. The mixes were also sent to Food 4 Less and Jay C Foods locations, although Kroger didn't specify the locations of those stores that received the salad mixes.

Included in the recall are Dole Italian Blend salad mixes with a use-by date of June 19, 2011; an UPC number of 7143000819; and product codes 0049A157201A, 0049A157201B, 0049A157202A, 0049A157202B, 0686A157202A and 0686A157202B.

Also included in the recall are Kroger Fresh Selections Italian Style Blend salad mixes with a use-by date of June 19, 2011; a UPC number of 1111091045; and product codes A157201A and A157201B.
