Shoppers Plan to Tap Daily Deal Sites This Father's Day
For Father's Day this year, 45% of online shoppers said they'd be perusing deal websites for Pop's gift, according to a recent consumer spending survey by PriceGrabber.com, the price comparison web site.
Just which sites will be getting the hits? Many of those surveyed plan to visit more than one site, with 52% expecting to use Groupon; 46% planning to use PriceGrabber's new local deals section; 29% reporting they'll use Google Offers; 20% indicating they'd check out Living Social; and 15% planning to visit Facebook Deals.
But tapping these daily deal sites is just one facet of shoppers' bargain hunting Father's Day shopping strategy this year, the survey found.Grilled on the money-saving techniques they plan to use, 34% of consumers said they planned to shop discount, bargain or outlet stores, while 18% planned to print coupons from retailers' web sites.
And while the recession might be officially over, the recessionary mindset lives on: More than one-third of the 11% of shoppers who plan to spend less on Dad this year than in 2010 cited the still-tough economy and higher gas prices as the key reasons why.
"As shoppers are becoming increasingly accustomed to a frugal lifestyle, they're also looking for the latest and greatest ways to snag a deal, especially on the Internet," Sharon Banfield, a PriceGrabber spokeswoman, told WalletPop.
So it comes as little surprise that this Father's Day, shoppers are mining the daily deal sites -- one of the newest retail channels -- which offer the promise of big bargains on mostly local products and services.
For instance, in honor of Father's Day, Boheme Salon & Spa in Redding, Calif., is offering men's haircuts for $20 and a one-hour massage and men's pedicure for $75 for the month of June on Facebook Deals. (The survey also revealed that 8% of respondents plan to give Dad an experiential, rather than tangible, gift this year. )
Meanwhile, PriceGrabber's Dads & Grads Gift Guide, which aggregates deals from a cross-section of retailers, includes GPS products, such as the Garmin 255W GPS for $99.92 from Amazon.com, for those dads who are loath to ask for driving directions.
The PriceGrabber survey also reported that 17% of consumers plan to buy Pops a hobby-related gift. For the golf-loving Dad, discounter Target, for one, is pushing Men's Callaway GameSeries' golf gloves for $9.99.
