For a third time, Hewlett-Packard Co. expanded a recall of its laptop batteries for HP and Compaq notebook computers -- this time, 162,600 batteries are affected -- after continuing to receive reports of the batteries overheating and burning consumers.

The computer giant announced the recall expansion on May 27 through the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. HP had previously recalled laptop batteries in May 2009 and May 2010. In all, 286,000 lithium-ion batteries have been recalled.

The CPSC said since May 2010, HP has gotten 40 more reports of batteries overheating and rupturing -- with seven consumers suffering burns, one suffering a smoke inhalation injury and 36 reporting property damage.
