Princess Diana Gets Barbuda Beach Named For Her

In time for Prince William's wedding, Princess Diana is being paid another tribute. A beach in Antigua and Barbuda, once frequented by the late princess, is being renamed in her honor.The three-mile stretch of beach is located on the southern end of the island of Barbuda, once part of Britain. The beach will be renamed Princess Diana Beach in a July 1 ceremony.

The date would have been her 50th birthday. However, she died in 1997 in Paris car crash at age 36.

"Barbuda became a sanctuary for the princess, and she seemed to find solace in the beauty of the island," Dorcas Beazer-Williams, tourism chairwoman for the Barbuda Council, told the Associated Press. She hopes the new beach will serve as a constant reminder of the Princess' legacy.

It's not the first time a place has been named for royalty, but Diana is once again in the spotlight because of her son's nuptials.

"From a tourism standpoint it puts a spotlight on Barbuda with all the hype with the royal wedding," Colin James, chief executive officer of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, told the AP.

Perhaps the newlyweds might consider a honeymoon to the beach, which Diana frequented with her boys when they were young?
