Spot LLC recalled about 15,400 of its Spot Satellite Communicators sold at Cabela's, Bass Pro Shops, REI, L.L. Bean and other stores nationwide because they could stop working when temperatures dip below 40 degrees F, said the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission.

The satellite communicator tracks a consumer's location and sends the global positioning system (GPS) coordinates and a distress message in case of an emergency. But CPSC said the internal voltage regulator can stop working and the units wouldn't be able to transmit the information in an emergency.

Spot said a part -- which did not meet operating specifications -- was substituted in some of the units during the manufacturing process in China.
