River Ship Collides with Cargo Ship in Danube
Fire department spokesman Ivan Petko tells the Associated Press a German cargo ship carrying corn was badly damaged and is sinking, while a Maltese cruise ship, the Viktoria, was only slightly damaged.
Five crew members on the cargo ship escaped unharmed, and no injuries were reported from the cruise ship.
Petko says the captain of the cruise ship was confident it could reach the port in nearby Bratislava, but there are conflicting reports on whether or not the ship has been evacuated. The Associated Press says it is, but Seatrade Insider quotes a waterway official who says an evacuation has been deemed unnecessary, though passengers would likely be transferred to another vessel later today.
The cause of the collision is being investigated. More details were not immediately available.
River cruises are popular on the Danube, and typically sail between Passau, Germany and Budapest, Hungary.
