Seltzer's Beef Lebanon Bologna Recalled: Links to E.coli Outbreaks

Palmyra Bologna Co. Inc. recalled about 23,000 pounds of Seltzer's Beef Lebanon bologna that has been linked to an e.coli outbreak in three states, said the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Four consumers in New Jersey, North Carolina and Pennsylvania were sickened between Jan. 28 and Feb. 2 with an e.coli infection FSIS linked to Seltzer's Beef Lebanon bologna. The agency didn't elaborate on the severity of the illnesses. The service is working with the U.S. Centers of Disease Control, the company and the states' health departments to investigate the outbreak.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control said the 14 people sickened in the e.coli outbreak were in five states -- Pennsylvania with six cases, Maryland with three, New Jersey with two, Ohio with two and North Carolina with one case.

The consumers, who ranged in age from one year old to 70 years old, reported getting sick between Jan. 10 and Feb. 15. Among the 13 people the CDC has information about, three had to be hospitalized. During the outbreak investigation, authorities learned four of those sickened bought Seltzer Lebanon bologna at stores in three states before getting ill.
