E&J Brandy Flask Recall: Can Have High Lead Levels
In people, high levels of lead can damage the nervous and reproductive systems as well as the kidneys, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control's Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry. E&J Brandy didn't elaborate on how much lead was found in the brandy, saying only "brandy stored in the flask under certain conditions may show elevated levels of lead."E&J Brandy recalled the rectangular flasks in the E&J VSOP gift sets sold from 2006 through 2010. The round flasks in the 206 E&J XO gift sets are also recalled. Some flasks in leather cases were also given away as a promotional item in 2007. The gift sets were sold nationwide.
The company said the brandy with the gift set is unaffected by the recall and may be safely drank as long as the liquor hasn't been in the flask. Consumers can call the company at (866) 959-8477 for instructions on how to return the flask for a refund.
National retailers including Walmart and Macy's agreed last summer to follow guidelines that limit lead levels in handbags, shoes and belts. The retailers agreed to put those rules in place by December.
