As Seen on TV Reality Check: Consumer Ally Tries Them Out

As seen on tv reviews consumer ally pasta boatIt's hard to watch TV late at night or early in the morning without seeing those most braggy of commercials. It seems like every As Seen on TV product is the best ever.

So, here at Consumer Ally we like to put them through the paces. Our own Lisa Kaplan Gordon lives in a veritable As Seen on TV house, cooking and cleaning and even grooming her dogs using As Seen on TV products. We feature a new review every week.

Here are some products she liked, detested and didn't think much of one way or the other, including Pasta Boat - of her favorites.
The Product: Pasta Boat
The Claims: All-In-One Pasta Cooker, Strainer, Server
The Price: $10 in stores
Buy-O-Meter Rating: 5 out of 5

Another product that she liked could come in handy if some of your other As Seen on TV products went awry. Check out Cold Fire, a handy aerosol fire extinguisher as demonstrated by firefighters.

The Product: Cold Fire
The Price: $19.99 (for 2) plus $11.98 shipping and handling
The Claims: Stops fires: instantly cools hot surfaces
Buy-O-Meter Rating: 3.5 out of 5 (4.5 if one can had not failed)

If you don't have much room in your kitchen or need an extra oven, NuWave Oven Pro could fit the bill. Some people have complained of its lack of durability, but Lisa's still cooking with hers.

The Product: NuWave Oven Pro
The Price: $119.97, plus $29.95 shipping and handling
The Claims: Cooks up to 50% faster than a regular oven, and cooks from frozen without defrosting
Buy-O-Meter Rating: 4 out of 5

Another winner in the kitchen is the Big Top Cupcake. It might seem like a bit of a cartoon in concept, but in reality it delivers what it promises - which is what we care about. In this case, an easy-to-make cake that resembles a huge cupcake.

The Product: Big Top Cupcake bakeware
The Price: Online $19.95, plus $6.95 shipping and handling
The Claims: Bakes giant cupcake 25 times bigger than a normal cupcake
Buy-O-Meter Rating: 4 out of 5

And then there were those you can't help but find when you look at these sometimes poorly executed gadgets.

Such is the case with BarkOff, which we found to be all bark and none of the BarkOff that was promised. It received our lowest rating.

The Product: BarkOff
The Price: $10, plus $6.99 shipping and handling
The Claims: Trains dogs to stop barking anytime, anywhere
Buy-O-Meter Rating: 0 out of 5

We had such high hopes for the One Touch Can Opener. High hopes, of course, set up for big disappointments.

The Product: One Touch Can Opener
The Price: $19.95, plus $6.95 shipping and handling
The Claims: "The last can opener you will ever buy"
Buy-O-Meter Rating: 1 out of 5

Some products, perhaps by virtue of their own over-the-top marketing, end up seeming like parodies. Such is the case of ShoeDini, which used the comic voice of Gilbert Gottfried and ended up with kind of a silly product.

The Product: ShoeDini
The Price: $14.99 plus $6.99 shipping and handling
The Claims: Takes the back-breaking work out of putting on shoes.
Buy-O-Meter Rating: 2 out of 5

A lot of people have drafts in their house, so it makes sense that there would be a product intended to stop the cold wind from intruding. It's not that the Twin Draft Guard does nothing. It's just that it doesn't do all that it claims. Some product pitches just boast a bit too much.

The Product: Twin Draft Guard
The Price: $28, including shipping and handling
The Claims: Creates airtight seal to save big on energy bills.
Buy-O-Meter Rating: 2 out of 5
