Stupid Recruiting Trick of the Week: Offensive Cougar Ad
If you saw an ad that read, "We've got a lot in common with cougars, we like 'em young too," what kind of impression would that give you? Believe it or not, this is how one police force attempted to recruit new officers.
The ad appeared both online and in print -- in New Zealand, mind you. But apparently there's not much tolerance for those types of references down there, either. The campaign ran for about two weeks in late December before it was pulled.
New Zealand police-force culture has been under scrutiny of late, and the offending cougar ads were canceled just prior to a critical report prepared for the State Services Commission was released, in response to commission inquiries into police conduct.
The ads may have been distasteful, but they were effective. They elicited 25,000 online inquiries, according to police officials.
