Planning a trip to Edmonton? Don't leave Fido at home. Edmonton is a city with a penchant for inclusivity-and that applies to the four-legged members of the family. Whether you are looking for an off-leash dog park or want to splurge on a gourmet puppy treat, Edmonton's pet friendly atmosphere is waiting to be explored.

Off-Leash Dog Parks

Finding the perfect spot for your pooch to wander through freely can be a daunting experience when visiting a new city. Edmonton has more than 40 dog-friendly areas spread out across all four quadrants of the city. When walking in public spaces, it is important to keep your dog on a leash, and to be prepared with a plastic bag for picking up waste. The off-leash areas are clearly marked and can be located on a map in the City of Edmonton's Parks for Paws brochure. Also keep in mind that many of the off-leash areas are located in treed areas where coyotes habituate. Keep your dog on his/her leash if you happen to come across one.

Pets Run Free - Laurier, Mill Creek & Terwilliger Parks

A crowd favourite for both pets and their owners is the Laurier Dog Park (officially called the Buena Vista Great Meadow). It is located North of Laurier Park and Buena Vista Dr., (approx. 88 Ave.) with parking across the field from the Edmonton Valley Zoo. In the winter, you can walk for hours through the flat snowy trails surrounded by Spruce and Poplar trees, or follow the trails down to the riverbank in the summer months where you'll find packs of dogs of various breeds playing and cooling off in the North Saskatchewan River. The Mill Creek off-leash area is a smaller but picturesque "urban wilderness" destination stretching between 50 St. and 42 Ave. to 34 St. and 34 Ave. on the Southside of the river. Further south is Terwilliger Park. Access is via Rabbit Hill Road.

Lunch Time in Edmonton

Edmonton is just catching on to the gourmet pet food scene, but there are a couple of locations west of downtown that are happy to treat your pooch to some homemade nutrition. Doggi Style Deli is a "dog restaurant" on Stony Plain Road offering additional services such as dog grooming, pet spa services and gourmet treat bakery. Peanut butter cookies are on the menu and so are Newfie Bars, a blend of oats, honey, peanut butter and some secret ingredients.

Food Dish Wishes is Edmonton's newest gourmet pet bakery in the 124 Street & Area shopping district. Owners and sisters Ashley and Tessa Lee bake all of the goods on site and run an animal rescue shelter on the premises. The girls encourage owners to pick up a coffee to go at neighbour (and people food fave) Duchess Bake Shop and drink it while the dogs chow down on homemade pastries, ice creams, and made-to-order specialty cakes in the enclosed outdoor patio space.
