Disney Starts Construction of New Fantasy Ship

Disney Cruise Line had the keel laying ceremony of the Disney Fantasy, sister ship to the Disney Dream, at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany. That means Disney's latest cruise ship is officially under construction.

Minnie Mouse assisted at the ceremony, helping Karl Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line, place a coin under the keel for good fortune. Then the first block, or section of the ship, was lowered into the building dock.

The 4,000-passenger Disney Fantasy will have many of the same features as the 4,000-passenger Disney Dream, including AquaDuck, the world's first shipboard water coaster. But the Fantasy will also have "a few new design elements and guest experiences" of its own, Disney says in a press release. Details were not disclosed.

The Fantasy will sail week-long Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral, Fla., beginning on March 31, 2012.

The Dream, Disney's first new ship in a decade and its largest ever, officially entered service last month with an extravagant naming ceremony. Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson is the Dream's godmother.
