$1,000-Down Home Deals: Enough for Detroit Police?

Angela Beauford, a retired Detroit firefighter, says there is not much the mayor there can do to entice her to move back to the city, not even offer sweet home deals. But hoping otherwise is the mayor of Motor City, who on Monday rolled out a project for Detroit police officers and firefighters that will help them qualify to purchase a home in one of two Detroit neighborhoods for as little as $1,000 down and a chance to have their mortgage loans forgiven.

Beauford fled Detroit for the suburbs 13 years ago to escape the poor school system. She thinks many current firefighters and police officers with school-age children probably would feel the same way.

"Honestly there is not anything they can offer me to move back unless the educational system is a lot better than what it is," said 53-year-old Beauford (pictured), who became a licensed real estate agent in 2002 after a severe job injury forced her to leave the fire department in 1998.
