Cary Grant Lived Here
Grant died in 1986.
This Great Spanish design, built in 1927, was Grant's private retreat from the world for more than 20 years. If walls could talk, they would shout here: The home was filled with Hollywood contemporaries and is now designated as Historic Class 1, the highest historic protection rating for a home. Located in the Movie Colony, a central Palm Springs neighborhood within walking distance of downtown, the area is dedicated to preserving the glory and splendor of old Hollywood. Many movie stars of the 1940's and 1950's owned second and third homes in Palm Springs, including Gable, Hope, Sinatra and Elvis Presley.
According to Mark Godson, a Dallas Realtor who has relocated to Palm Springs, the Grant home was purchased by a woman who lovingly restored it to its former splendor. A replica of a 19th Century Spanish Farmhouse, the home is a rare two story with six bedrooms, five and a half baths, 5 zoned HVAC areas which is good because it gets very, very hot in Palm Springs during the summer. The home is a 6000 square foot private retreat on 1.54 acres with lush expansive lawns, guest wing designed by Wallace Neff, architect of Hollywood's Golden Age; a studio, walled/gated driveways (two), original tiles and many original architectural details preserved. The sun-filled great room is 40 feet long, the living room is double height, and the upstairs master has fireplace and balconies plus built in dressing room. The courtyard is landscaped around the saline pool, and mountain views are everywhere. Best of all, Mark tells me that home prices have been reduced by almost fifty percent in some parts of the town. But for history, maybe not so much: Cary Grant's home is listed at $2,995,000.
