A Day in New York City in Miniature [video]

New York City in Miniature

Screencapture from Vimeo video by Sam O'Hare

Capturing a day in the life of a city with over eight million people would be a daunting task. However, Aero Films director Sam O'Hare did just that and did it with a whole new perspective. Watch his film "The Sandpit" to see what a day in the life of New York City would be like in miniature.

According to an interview with Aero Film, Sam shot the video with a Nikon D3. "I used my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 lenses for all of these shots. Most were shot at 4fps in DX crop mode, which is the fastest the D3 could continuously write out to the memory card."

What was surprising to me was that he did all of the miniaturization in post production. Not one frame was shot using a tilt-shift lens which is typically how most photographers and filmmakers create this effect. Sam told Aero Films that it took over 35,000 shots over a five day and two evening shoot.

For me, editing would require a ton of patience, a whole lot of coffee and definitely quite a few beers to get through that process. Hats off to Sam for an amazing film.
