Val Kilmer Ranch Slapped With Second Tax Lien
Seven months ago he was slapped with a tax lien of $538,858 which he paid. Now comes word that a second lien, this one running $498,165 for unpaid taxes to Uncle Sam, has been placed on the 6,000-plus acre ranch he is trying so hard to sell.
Kilmer runs the ranch as a bed-and-breakfast, and it is one of the most beautiful acreage properties in the country, with seven miles of breathtaking river frontage along the Pecos River,
But the market is down, and Kilmer has chopped the price of his southwest paradise almost in half. In 2009, he had it listed for $33 million and then lowered the price to $23 million last October. The ranch was even listed on Craigslist. Chop, chop: Kilmer is now asking $18.5 million.
According to the current listing agent, there has been a lot of interest in the ranch. He did not say whether the tax liens might force Kilmer to lower the price of the property further or scare away potential buyers, since all tax liens must be disclosed. Of course, in this economic climate, tax liens may not be all that unusual: Realtor magazine says that the federal government held tax liens on more than 1 million properties in 2008.
The star of The Doors and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Kilmer has floated the idea of running for governor of New Mexico, where he has lived for the past two decades. The latest word is it's unlikely we'll be calling him Governor Kilmer. But should that change, he should be highly supportive of tax reform.
