'Sesame Street' Coming to New Children's Museum

"Sesame Street" will soon have a place in the National Children's Museum. The creators of the long-running children's show are developing an interactive area at the facility, slated to open near Washington D.C. in 2013.

The nonprofit Sesame Workshop will install interactive exhibits, video segments and books in the museum's Early Learners gallery and also will develop programs for the museum's Our World gallery.

"We look forward to collaborating on what we believe is going to be a very compelling and exciting family destination and are happy for NCM to be Sesame Street's new home in the nation's capital," Sesame Workshop CEO Gary Knell said in the statement.

Founded in 1974 as the Capital Children's Museum, the NCM will open its new facility in National Harbor, Md., about 10 miles south of Washington, in two years. The NCM currently operates a 2,700-square-foot space in National Harbor called the Launch Zone.

Sesame Street first debuted on public broadcasting stations in 1969 and now airs in more than 140 countries.
