Insider's Guide to Getting a Job at Marriott

Marriott certainly has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a root beer stand over 75 years ago.

Today, Marriott employs more than 150,000 people in 65 countries. They have 1,100 managed hotels and an 18-property portfolio that includes such well-known brands as Courtyard, Residence Inn, Renaissance and Ritz-Carlton.

According to Karl Fischer, Marriott's chief HR officer for the Americas, Marriott is a big company with a family feel. Marriott's founder, J. Willard Marriott, believed that if you look after your employees they will look after the guests. The current chairman & CEO, J.W. Bill Marriott, Jr., manages by the same philosophy and even makes visits to more than 300 Marriott properties each year.

The Marriott employees that AOL Jobs interviewed agree that working at Marriott feels like being part of a family. Many front desk workers, hotel chefs, supervisors, and HR managers spoke of Marriott's supportive and appreciative work environment. They have found mentors, a breadth of opportunities and the chance to transfer to other functional areas in the company. One employee described the Marriott experience as "the ability to form your own journey."

AOL Jobs asked Fischer what people should know about Marriott if they are interested in working there. Here's what he had to say.

A. Marriott employees are excited to serve hotel guests. They are interested in opportunities and advancement and they are hardworking and dedicated.

A. Applicants should learn about Marriott and its history and culture. Know your values and show how they align with ours.

Q. Why is Marriott a great place to work?

A. While Marriott is a big global company, people with different experiences and different backgrounds feel included.
