News Corp, Apple Delay Launch of iPad Newspaper, 'The Daily'

Updated

Yet another media property meant to be launched for Apple (AAPL) portable products has been delayed. The Daily, which was to be released as a paid media product by News Corp (NWS) with Apple's aid will not debut this week, according to several media sources. It appears that the app and the e-commerce platform that is supposed to work with it have flaws.

News Corp has hired dozens of journalists and the project is intended to prove Rupert Murdoch's contention that premium editorial content can be sold and can make money online.

The delay of The Daily is not unprecedented. Time Inc had trouble launching both its Sports Illustrated and People apps. Publisher Conde Nast found that readers of its magazines had trouble navigating app versions of its magazines.

The problems between major media companies and Apple's download and read technology may go on for some time. Many publishers can't figure out how to match their content to the habits of portable device users. The e-commerce aspects of many of these efforts appear to make the download process difficult and cumbersome.

If the iPad and iPhone are supposed to be part of the salvation of the print industry, that plan seems to be on hold. The Internet and portable devices may not pay the dividends newspapers and magazines hoped that they would.
