Microsoft Xbox Sold Out in December, Shortages May Run Through February
Microsoft (MSFT) sold out of its Xbox video-game console in late December thanks to strong holiday-season demand, and may have product shortages in January and February as well, as the company's Kinect motion-sensor device has boosted the popularity of the system, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.
Video-game retailers sold 1.9 million Microsoft Xbox 360s in December, a record month for the company's consoles, the newspaper said, citing the Microsoft and NPD Group statistics.
The Xbox was the only video-game console to see December sales rise compared to 2009, though it trailed the 2.3 million Wii's sold by Nintendo (NTDOY), the newspaper said.
Overall, Americans spent $1.84 billion on video-game hardware last month, down 16% from a year earlier, NPD Group said late Thursday. Hardware sales for all of 2010 dropped 13% from a year earlier to $6.29 billion, according to NPD.
