Nearly 200,000 dehumidifiers sold under the GE and Professional Series brand names at Walmart, Sam's Club, Home Depot, Menards and other stores nationwide have been recalled after 22 incidents including eight fires, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

A part of the dehumidifier's compressor can short, creating a fire hazard, CPSC said. So far there have been no injuries reported, but in six of the eight fires, consumers reported property damage. In the other incidents, the units spewed smoke and fumes. About 198,000 dehumidifiers were sold nationwide between February 2007 and June 2009 for between $140 and $180.
