Dubai Hotel Employee Jailed for Having Sex with Guest, Abortion
The hotel employee, identified only as MB, was first arrested in September at a Dubai hospital where she had gone for treatment of hemorrhaging after taking abortion pills, reports The National newspaper.
Abortion is strictly prohibited under United Arab Emirates and Islamic law, except in extreme circumstances. The woman was charged with violating laws regarding sex outside of marriage and aborting a four-month-old fetus.
"MB told prosecutors that she met an American guest at the Dubai hotel where she was employed and he invited her for an evening out. She said they had sex, and she never saw him again," the newspaper reports.
The woman's lawyer argued that she should be freed because, among other things, there was a lack of witnesses and evidence and because she is a non-Muslim who had little prior knowledge of local law.
The criminal court could have sentenced her to a maximum penalty of 100 lashes and up to five years in prison. The woman's lawyer said she had already served 113 days of her 132-day sentence.
