Las Vegas Strip Going Vehicle-Free For New Year's

The Las Vegas Strip will be closed to vehicle traffic on New Years Eve, when more than 300,000 people are expected to flood the city to ring in 2011.

Associated Press reports Las Vegas Boulevard between Sahara Avenue and Russell Road will be shut down at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night. This stretch includes every property from the Sahara hotel-casino to Mandalay Bay.

Major freeway exists passing the Strip are expected to be closed by highway patrol authorities as well.

According to Las Vegas police spokesman Marcus Martin, authorities will allow traffic to flow again early Saturday once the festivities settle down.

The highlight of Sin City's celebration will be a $500,000 fireworks show set off from seven resort rooftops: MGM Grand, Planet Hollywood Resort, Aria, Caesars Palace, The Venetian, Treasure Island and Stratosphere. Performances being held around town include Coldplay, Jay-Z, the Bay City Rollers, Kool and the Gang, Pitbull, and more.
