Samsung Aims for iPod with New Android-Based Music Player

Updated

Can Samsung take on the Apple (AAPL) iPod? It looks like the company aims to try next month, when it plans to unveil a new music player based on Google's (GOOG) Android platform at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Samsung's Galaxy Player, which will look similar to the company's Galaxy S cell phone, will be about 10 millimeters thick, with a 1-gigahertz central processing unit and a 4-inch liquid-crystal-display screen, SamsungHub.com reported Monday.

With the Galaxy Player, Samsung, which already competes against Apple in the rapidly growing smartphone industry, would face Apple as a competitor in the music-player market as well.

Apple has sold more than 250 million iPods since introducing the product in 2001. The iPod's most recent incarnation, the Nano, launched in September with a retail price of $149. But overall, sales are down. In October, Apple said it had sold 9 million iPods for the quarter ended Sept. 25, which represents an 11% drop from a year earlier.
