The year maybe almost over, but there seems no end to the string of recalls issued by automakers this year. The latest action, announced Thursday, involves some 100,000 vehicles produced by General Motors (GM).

The Detroit-based auto giant is warning that airbags in some Cadillac models may not deploy in a crash, and that rear axles on some truck models may lock up, possibly leading to a crash, according to notices posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

Models affected by the airbag recall include about 96,000 Cadillac CTS vehicles from the 2005 to 2007 model years. GM says a sensing device in the front passenger seat may become inoperative from repeated use and not detect the presence of front seat passengers, putting them at risk for increased injury in a crash.

The recall was prompted after the federal agency began an investigation into the problem in September, The Detroit News reported. GM will begin the recall when it has replacement parts, the company said.

Further, GM is providing additional warranty coverage -- for up to 10 years or 120,000 miles -- for the airbag defect to an additional 62,867 2005-07 Cadillac CTS models not covered by the warranty, GM spokesman Alan Adler told the News.

In a separate action, GM said it is recalling 1,262 truck and large sports-utility vehicles from the 2011 model year to replace rear axle cross pins that were manufactured improperly. Should the pin become displaced, there is a risk that the rear axle could lock up, possibly resulting in loss of driver control that may lead to a crash, according to NHTSA.

The recall involves Cadillac Escalade; Chevrolet Avalanche 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 models. GM expects to begin the recall sometime next month. The repair involves replacing the rear axle cross pin with a new one.

Owners of the affected vehicles can call Cadillac at 866-982-2339; Chevrolet at 800-630-2438; and GMC at 866-996-9463.

A third campaign announced earlier this week by Isuzu Motors this involves nearly 3,000 GM trucks the 2006-07 model years that were built by the Japanese automaker.

Improperly tightened oil-pipe bolts may cause oil to leak from the engine causing abnormal engine noise and possible seizure of the vehicles' engines. NHTSA says the problem poses a threat to passengers safety because a seized engine may result in sudden deceleration, increasing the risk of a crash.

Owners of affected Chevrolet, GMC and Isuzu models will be notified in late January or early February to bring their vehicles in for repairs. Owners may contact Isuzu at 800-255-6727.

The GM recalls comes a day after one announced by Honda Motor (HMC), which said Wednesday it was recalling nearly 11,000 late-model Accord V6 and Pilot vehicles to fix loose suspension components that could possibly result in a loss of steering.
