General Motors Recalls 100,000 SUVs to Repair Seat Belts

General Motors (GM) is recalling nearly 100,000 popular crossover sport-utility vehicles to repair driver and front passenger seat belts that may come loose in a crash.

The Detroit-based automaker is recalling 97,843 Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossover vehicles from the 2011 model year to repair seat-belt buckle anchors that may fracture and separate from a component that attaches the anchors to the seat, according to a posting on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

The problem was discovered during tests of the seat belts in September, CNNMoney.com reported. Two incidents that developed during the tests affected only the driver's side seat belt, but the same anchor is used on passenger side seats.

The seat belts won't fail on a first impact, a GM spokesman said, but subsequent crashes could leave drivers and front-seat passengers vulnerable to increased injury.

GM will begin notifying owners of affected vehicles on or before Jan. 18 to bring their cars to a dealer to have the seat-belt buckles modified. The repair, as is customarily the case in safety recalls, will be performed free of charge.
