John Toomey Fired as Macy's Santa, Allegedly for Offbeat Humor
After 20 years as Santa Claus at the Union Square Macy's in San Francisco, John Toomey has been fired, reports Kevin Fagan in the San Francisco Chronicle. This tragic news is resonating around the nation, including being an item in high-profile Gawker.
The reason why Toomey got the boot isn't entirely clear. That's because Macy's, like most corporations, treats personnel matters as confidential. The buzz, though, is that for years Toomey had a routine of corny jokes he used with older adults. One was to ask if they had been good all year. If they answered 'yes,' he would reply 'Gee, that's too bad.' Another was his smack down when adults asked him why he was so jolly and he'd reply it was because he knows where all the naughty boys and girls live.
It's said that an older couple found this offbeat humor as inappropriate and reported Toomey to management. Now he is one more unemployed American.
