Seat Problem Prompts Volvo to Recall 7,420 Vehicles

Swedish automaker Volvo is recalling 7,420 sedans and wagons to fix a problem that may allow front passengers to move their seats too far forward, putting them at risk of injury in a crash, federal safety officials said Monday.

Volvo is recalling 2009 to 2011 S40 and S60 sedans and V50 wagons and 2010 to 2011 XC60 wagons to fix the problem, which involves the front passenger seat rail's detection system, according to a notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website.

Volvo dealers will inspect the front passenger seat for presence of an "end stop" and make repairs, if necessary, at no charge to customers, NHTSA said.

The automaker, acquired in August by China's Geely Holding Group from Ford Motor (F), hasn't yet provided NHTSA with a date by which customers will be notified, the agency said.
