BlueGreen Pays Consumers Duped by Timeshare Incentives

Chairs on a beach at a resortA Florida timeshare company paid $60,533 in restitution to Pennsylvania consumers promised free gifts and other timeshare incentives BlueGreen Corp. used to market timeshares and vacation packages in the state, said Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett.

"Consumers were promised a wide variety of 'free' items, including airline tickets, hotel accommodations, cruise packages, gas cards, restaurant gift certificates and other valuable prizes," Corbett said in a statement. "For most people, the promise of a 'valuable prize' turned out to be nothing more than vouchers or coupons that required other expensive purchases before they could be used, or were limited by massive 'fine print' restrictions."The restitution was part of a consumer protection settlement reached with BlueGreen Corp. earlier this year. The settlement was OK'd by Commonwealth Court in June. At the time, a BlueGreen spokesman said the company was happy with the settlement, which ended a two-year legal battle.

Corbett said the state will continue to review more than 100 complaints from Pennsylvanians who either own BlueGreen timeshares or bought its vacation packages. Much of the settlement includes an agreement by BlueGreen to cancel contracts or pay refunds to consumers who were unable to use their timeshares or didn't get extra services or discounts promised during sales pitches.
