Mozilla Corp., the maker of the Firefox Internet browser, is considering creating a do-not-track mechanism to offer users more privacy.
Web browsers are caught in the cross fire between regulators seeking to protect user privacy and online advertisers who want more information on users' preferences.
Earlier this year, Mozilla scrapped a tool intended to limit tracking, The Wall Street Journal reported.
"Our goal is to put the user in control but not overwhelm them," says Mike Shaver, vice president of engineering at Mozilla.
Firefox is the Web's second-most popular browser, after Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
Later this week, a subcommittee in the U.S. House of Representatives will hold a hearing about do-not-track proposals.
