MySpace Launches 'Mashup' Feature With Facebook

Updated

In the "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" department, MySpace launched a feature that lets users import interests from their Facebook profiles to give MySpace pages a broader stream of entertainment content.

The so-called "Mashup with Facebook" feature's algorithms allow prospective Myspace users to rapidly create a profile while linking Facebook's "likes" and "interests" with relevant Myspace pages, MySpace said in a statement Thursday. Users of MySpace, which is a unit of Fox parent News Corp. (NWS), may also be linked to Facebook friends' Myspace pages and profiles as well.

"This new feature is a great illustration of our strategy around social entertainment and enabling the real-time stream," MySpace CEO Mike Jones, said in the statement. "The stream is one of our most popular features on Myspace, and it is now delivering an even richer entertainment experience of relevant content for our users to enjoy."

While social networking continues to expand, MySpace has been losing ground to closely held Facebook. Facebook has more than 500 million users, half of which log onto the site on a daily basis, the company says.

Facebook.com last month attracted more than 148 million unique visitors, making it the fourth-largest U.S. site behind Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft (MSFT) sites, according to ComScore.

Meanwhile, MySpace parent News Corp. (NWS) said earlier this month that its operating loss from non-publishing and broadcasting operations for the quarter ended Sept. 30 widened 24% to $156 million primarily because of lower advertising and search revenue from MySpace.
