Most Successful Video-Game Debut Ever: 'Call of Duty: Black Ops'

Updated

Activision Blizzard's (ATVI)"Call of Duty: Black Ops" video game has set a five-day sales record, generating more than $650 million in global sales during the five days after its Nov. 9 release.

The new title broke the $550 million record set by Activision's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" last year, the video-game publisher said Thursday. The company called it the most successful debut of any entertainment product.

"The number of people playing online and the number of hours they are playing demonstrates how online gaming has become a mainstream form of entertainment and certainly validates Activision Blizzard's leadership role in online entertainment," Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said in a statement.

The game also broke a first-day videogame sales record, generating about $360 million in U.S. and U.K. sales. on its debut day, Activision said last week.

The game's performance spells good news for a videogame industry that has been hampered this year by falling sales. Many cash-strapped gamers have opted to either buy used games or play free titles online instead of buying new games. As a result, gaming software sales for the first 10 months of the year fell 7% to $5.54 billion, although they did rise 6% for the month of October, NPD Group said this week.
