In the first 10 days after its launch, Microsoft (MSFT) said that it has sold more than 1 million of its hands-free Kinect gaming systems.

The software giant is hoping that the Kinect, which plugs into an Xbox and lets you play games just by moving your body or speaking commands, will help boost Xbox sales and fend off competition from Nintendo (NTDOY) and Sony (SNE).

Don Mattrick, head of Microsoft's game unit, told Reuters that the company is on track to beat its sales target of 5 million by the end of the year.

"It's a strong start," Mattrick said. "Consumers are loving it."

Sales may have benefited from consumers ordering the device before it went on sale. Mattrick said he hoped that demand will remain high as Black Friday – one of the biggest shopping days of the year – approaches on Nov. 26.
