Back then, Schmidt said Google was interested in injecting social technology into its offerings, rather than building a stand-alone social networking site like Facebook. Barra, according to Reuters, expanded on that view, noting Google considers social media a feature that can enhance the success of apps like search and advertising.
Part of Google's reluctance to commit to creating a designated social networking site may come from its experience in owning Orkut. That social networking site has gained a strong following in India and Brazil, but hasn't seen much success outside those regions, according to Reuters.
