SquareTrade: Apple iPhone is the Most Reliable Smartphone
Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 4 is the most reliable smartphone available, according to a Wednesday report from warranty provider SquareTrade.
Only 2.1% of iPhone 4 smartphones -- unveiled in June -- have nonaccident malfunctions within the first year of ownership, compared to 2.3% of Motorola (MOT)-made Android phones and 3.7% of Androids made by HTC, SquareTrade says. Meanwhile, Research in Motion's (RIMM) BlackBerry devices are about three times as likely to break down as iPhones, with a 6.3% chance of malfunctioning within the first year.
Overall, smartphones are getting more reliable. As a group, they're about half as likely to break down in a year as they were two years ago, as well as more reliable than other consumer electronics such as laptop computers and netbooks, according to the report.
First introduced in 2007, the iPhone continues to be a big source of profit for Apple. Last month, the company said fiscal fourth-quarter earnings surged 70% from a year earlier partially because it sold 14.1 million iPhones, up 91% from a year earlier.
