Verizon Wireless's $70 Unlimited Promotion: It's Not for Everyone
We all know that not everybody can be on the A-list, but who knew that your cell phone carrier was so selective?
Verizon Wireless (VZ) is sending out notices to existing customers in select markets, informing them that they're eligible for a discounted plan that will give them unlimited text, mobile-to-mobile calls, data and 450 minutes of talk time for $69.99 a month, according to a Boy Genius report that has emails of the Verizon Wireless promo.
But not everyone is eligible for the promotion, according to The Wall Street Journal. Verizon Wireless was mum on how many people had been offered the promotional rate, or whether there were plans to expand it. And no information was provided on who specifically could to advantage of the offer, except that it was available to folks who appeared poised to bolt from the Verizon network.

Without the retention tool promotion, customers who want the same level of service would have to fork over nearly $90 for a comparable plan. While the reports note that Verizon's all-you-can-eat deal is comparable on price terms to competitor Sprint Nextel's (S) Any Mobile, Any Time plan, the battle for customers' hearts may ultimately be fought and won based on who has the best network to offer.
Sprint Nextel is rolling out its souped up WiMAX 4G service in New York this month, with plans to add Los Angeles next month and San Francisco by the end of the year, according to an RCR Wireless Newsreport. In the meantime, Verizon Wireless is gearing up its LTE next-generation network to debut by the end of the year in those markets and 35 others.
