Egg recall expanded over Salmonella contamination fears

Cal-Maine Foods Inc. added another 120 dozen eggs to a recall announced Monday over possible Salmonella contamination, the company said through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Pippin Loose Medium eggs from plant number 1457, a Julian date of 282 and a sell-by/expiration date of 11/07/2010 were added to the recall, the company said. Plant number and Julian dates are printed on each carton.

Cal-Maine said consumers shouldn't eat the eggs and should return them for a full refund. Consumers can call the company at (866) 276-6299 between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Eastern.

Cal-Maine recalled 288,000 eggs Monday after Salmonella contamination was found on a supplier's farm, Ohio Fresh Eggs LLC. Salmonella can cause a potentially life-threatening infection in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. The infection can cause nausea, fever and diarrhea, among other symptoms.
