What it's like to be a hotel doorman on Chicago's Magnificent Mile

Updated

The Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel, located just off Chicago's Magnificent Mile, has been open since the late 1920s -- for a time, it was the Playboy Hotel, serving the magazine's headquarters above -- but in that time has employed only two head doormen. Jason Cochran went to Chicago to meet the second one, Taha "Tom" Alaraj. Bragging job security that is almost unheard of in the commercial United States these days, Tom has served as the doorman for 39 years. He talks about the ritual of his job as well as how it's shifted with our culture. Do we still travel the same way? Tom also settles, once and for all, how much you should tip the doorman.
