Museum of Sex takes half off in Groupon

sexy girl - Sex museum half off with Groupon postFinally, a holiday discount on sex. The Museum of Sex in Manhattan has hooked up with Groupon, offering half off admission through Jan. 12. Instead of the usual $18, you'll pay just $9 to see such exhibits as Rubbers: The Life, History, & Struggle of the Condom and Action: Sex and the Moving Image. Don't forget to visit the OralFix Aphrodisiac Cafe and the gift shop.

The window to sign up closes at midnight Sunday, according to Groupon's posted countdown. (Note that outside of Groupon, the museum's website also offers a $3 off coupon.)

While I dig Groupon (and WalletPop knows a man who lives off them), I quickly delete many of the offers. But sex is sex. And it does indeed sell. Within hours of the deal dropping into my e-mail, thousands had bought in. It seems many of us want to be naughty and nice on a budget. Maybe this year Black Friday can segue into Sexy Saturday.

"The deal is selling extremely well for a museum deal," Groupon spokeswoman Julie Mossler e-mailed WalletPop, "though it's important to note that other museums in D.C. and Chicago have had similar success. Our customers love the arts."

Museum of Sex spokesman Jim O'Shea told WalletPop, "The speed is surprising. Every time we check, it's not slowing down."

Please note that if you're hoping the museum is a glossed-up 42nd Street adult bookstore circa 1985, you're out of luck. It's all about sex, but, like the website says, it's "titter-free."

The coupon should help the museum reach its goal of attracting more than 160,000 visitors this year -- a figure mentioned in the Wall Street Journal.

One of the best other bargains going for unconventional New York tourism is the Transit Museum. Always $6 for adults, $4 for kids 3 to 17. It's located in an old Brooklyn subway station, and chronicles perhaps our country's greatest underground movement.

Visit them one after the other. That way you can learn about sex -- and the city.
