Facebook Says Data Broker Was Buying User Info

Updated

Facebook said that a data broker has been buying information on users from application developers.

Certain Facebook apps were sending users' Facebook ID numbers to third-party marketing or data firms, violating the site's privacy policies, The Wall Street Journal said. Companies can use an ID number to look up a user's name and other information.

Facebook said it has put some developers on a six-month suspension from the site.

The social networking site didn't identify the data broker that was buying the ID numbers. It did say that it had reached an agreement with Rap Leaf Inc, the data broker that "came forward to work with us."

It's not clear if Facebook is implicating Rap Leaf.

Rap Leaf agreed to delete all Facebook user IDs in its possession and "not to conduct any activities on the Facebook Platform."
