Companies Launch Media Registry to Track Assets

Updated

Studios, cable and tech companies said they will launch an Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR) to track movies and TV shows in the same way that books are coded.

Each media asset, from a full-length movie to a short clip, will receive a unique ID, like an International Standard Book Number (ISBN), Reuters reported. The registry will make it easier for businesses to search, track and report the revenue from a media asset.

Companies including Comcast (CMCSA) and Sony (SNE) have backed the initiative.

"We believe this standard will improve the flow of information among the companies we work with throughout the industry," said Mark Hess, senior vice president at Comcast.
