PG&E Finds 38 Natural-Gas Leaks, Though None Near California Explosion Site

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PCG) found 38 leaks in its more than 6,700 miles of natural-gas transmission lines, though said its 16 miles of lines in the San Bruno, Calif., area where a September explosion killed eight people were satisfactory.

PG&E found four leaks on main transmission pipelines and 34 more leaks in its other facilities, the company said in a statement Monday. The company's also investigating 300 locations most likely to require natural-gas valve replacement and will complete that process by mid-December, PG&E said.

A PG&E gas line exploded on Sept. 9 in San Bruno, about 12 miles south of San Francisco. The blast killed eight people and destroyed dozens of homes.

Less than two weeks later, the company released a list of 100 gas lines that may be most likely to be corroded, though the San Bruno line wasn't on that list.
