Americans Evenly Split on Which Party Should Control Congress, Poll Says

Americans are evenly split on which political party should control Congress, while about a third of likely voters are apathetic, according to a Pew Research Center poll released Monday.

About 32% of registered voters prefer that Democrats keep control of Congress, while 32% indicated that the U.S. would be better off if Republicans took over, according to Pew Research's survey of about 1,000 adults polled between Oct. 21-24. Thirty percent said it makes no difference which party controls Congress.

The poll indicates Democrats may be gaining ground on the Republicans. A Pew Poll released last week indicated that Republicans had about a 10-point lead over Democrats when it came to upcoming Congressional elections.

Meanwhile, slightly less than half of those polled said President Barack Obama should run for reelection in 2012, with 83% of Democrats favoring an attempt at a second term and 88% of Republicans against it, according to the Pew poll.
